Minds & Hearts has 12 team members: nine psychologists, one sexologist, and two receptionists. Although not all disciplines are represented in our team we maintain close ties with other specialists in Brisbane and will assist in finding the best professional for the need.

Dr Michelle Garnett
MPsych(Clin) PhD MAPS MCCP
Michelle is Founder and Director of 'Minds & Hearts.’ She is a clinical psychologist and has specialised in autism spectrum disorders for 14 years. Michelle created the first screening instrument for Asperger’s syndrome, the Australian Scale for Asperger's Syndrome (ASAS) in 1993 and has completely revised the instrument for publication in 2008. For this work she recently achieved a PhD from the University of Queensland. She has developed expertise in all subtypes of autism across all ages. Prior to opening Minds & Hearts Michelle was Clinic Director and clinical lecturer for the clinical postgraduate programme at Griffith University, Gold Coast campus.
Her current research and clinical interests are the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders, and the understanding and development of optimal support and information networks for people on the spectrum and their families. Michelle regularly provides workshops on autism and Asperger’s syndrome in Australia and overseas.

Professor Tony Attwood
MSc PhD AFBPsS MAPS MCCP
Tony is a clinical psychologist and Senior Consultant at Minds & Hearts. He acquired his original qualifications in England, and achieved a PhD from the University of London. He has specialised in autism spectrum disorders, especially Asperger's syndrome. Tony is an adjunct professor at Griffith University, Queensland. His book Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals has become one of the primary texts on Asperger's Syndrome and has been translated into twenty languages.
His current clinical interests are developing diagnostic procedures and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for emotion management for children and adults with Asperger's Syndrome.

Winnie Yu Pow Lau
MPsych(Ed) PGradDip(Ch&FamPsych) MAPS
Winnie Lau is a psychologist highly trained in the area of autism spectrum disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome. She can assist with the problems that frequently co-exist with Asperger’s Syndrome or autism, for e.g. depression, anxiety, behavioural problems, and OCD. Winnie is skilled in emotional, behavioural and educational assessments, and in a variety of different therapies. Winnie can provide these services in Mandarin and Cantonese; and has implemented programs for clients from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Prior to her employment at Minds and Hearts, Winnie worked at the Ministry of Education in New Zealand, and had a successful track record in working with people with complex needs.

Stephen Underwood

Stephen completed his undergraduate studies at the University of New England, receiving a Bachelor of Psychology with 1st Class Honours. He has also completed a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology at Griffith University. Stephen has had experience working as a psychologist with both adults and children in a variety of settings including: Queensland Health and in private clinics. Stephen has specialised knowledge and skill in Autism Spectrum Disorders in children and adults. His other clinical interests include: childhood and adult anxiety, depression, ADHD and schizophrenia.

Dr Hui Keow Lim
DPsych (Clin) MAPS MCCP
Hui is a clinical psychologist who has worked with children, adolescents and adults in various clinical settings for almost 10 years. She has specialised knowledge and skills in working with individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Hui completed her Doctorate in Asperger’s Syndrome in 2006.
Her current clinical and research interests are the development of theory of mind, social skills, and drawings by individuals on the spectrum.

Ivy Gomez

Ivy Gomez is a psychologist who completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree at De La Salle University – Manila, with honors, at the top 10% of her graduating class. She has also completed her Master in Clinical Psychology at Queensland University of Technology. Ivy holds much enthusiasm and interest in working with individuals diagnosed with a Pervasive Developmental Disorder. She has been highly trained in the field of autism and Asperger’s syndrome and is adept in a range of different assessments and intervention models. She can provide assistance with issues related to autism or Asperger’s syndrome for e.g. anxiety, anger, depression, and social skills difficulties.

Louise Ford

Louise is a clinical psychologist who completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Louise has gained experience from working within a number of settings including Queensland Health, Private Hospitals, and schools. Louise conducted her research into the treatment of childhood anxiety disorders and this continues to be of ongoing clinical interest to her. She is skilled at assisting parents to better manage their children’s behaviour and at providing assistance and support to individuals with an autism spectrum diagnosis and their families. Louise is very interested and motivated to assist in improving the quality of life of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Mikako Naito

Mikako Naito is a psychologist who is enthusiastic about the field of autistic spectrum disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome (AS), particularly as experienced by girls and women. Mikako placed a heavy emphasis on AS during her studies at Griffith University. Mikako takes a hands-on, definitive and visual approach in her therapy, which has received much positive feedback from individuals and families dealing with AS. She is also skilled at teaching various relaxation methods to help individuals with sleep difficulties, anger and anxiety issues. Being originally from Japan, Mikako can offer therapy in Japanese as well.

Elizabeth Locke

Elizabeth completed her undergraduate studies at Griffith University, receiving a Bachelor of Psychology with 1st Class Honours. She is nearing completion of a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, also through Griffith University. Elizabeth has experience working as a psychologist with both adults and children with a range of issues from mild to very severe. She has worked within the education domain, and is skilled in providing support and guidance to families who have a child with autism or another disability. She is skilled at incorporating her creative abilities into the therapeutic intervention process. Elizabeth is very committed and motivated to supporting families and individuals on the autism spectrum, and has a special research interest in Children’s Coping.

Dr Isabelle Henault - Consultant to Minds & Hearts
MA (Sexology) PhD MAPS
Dr Isabelle Hénault, is a psychologist from the University of Québec at Montréal, Canada. Her practice and studies have focused on providing diagnosis, education and support to children, adolescents, adults and couples living with Asperger's Syndrome. Dr. Hénault has developed a relationships and sex education program, and works with individuals and groups to increase their understanding of sexuality, and conducts relationship counseling. She is presently collaborating on numerous international research initiatives involving socio-sexual education and interpersonal relationships. Dr. Hénault is the author of Asperger's Syndrome and Sexuality: From Adolescence through Adulthood, published by Jessica Kingsley Publisher, UK. She is currently working in Canada but is a consultant to Minds & Hearts.

Beverlee

Beverlee has been Michelle’s Personal Assistant for the past couple of years. With the opening of Minds & Hearts in October 2005, Beverlee also added the role of receptionist to her duties. Prior to this, she had been heavily involved in the commercial administration field as personal secretary, trainer and facilitator, working with people of all ages and cultures. A keen interest in autism and Asperger’s syndrome has been part of Beverlee’s life for the past 14 years by following, and being actively involved in, Michelle’s career.

Erica recently joined Minds and Hearts as Receptionist. Prior to joining Minds and Hearts Erica was employed in schools in NSW and Qld - two of the schools being specifically for children with special needs. Erica is passionate about children, their education, and meeting the needs of all people with special needs.
