Being an adult on the autism spectrum brings its rewards but can at times be challenging, confusing and distressing. It can be difficult to know which are the right choices, where to go for help, and who to see. The team at Minds and Hearts are specialized in autism spectrum conditions (ASC) and in many, varied adult issues. Our team members are well-placed to offer guidance, assistance and support across a broad range of issues, and can incorporate their specialist knowledge of ASC to many unique situations. At Minds & Hearts we follow best practice guidelines and not only keep up with the research on ASC, but contribute to it also. Clinical knowledge and research indicates that Group Therapy can be very helpful for adults on the autism spectrum. In the past we have offered two groups for adults:
“Dating Game” is for adults interested in learning tips and ideas to assist in finding a partner. The group meets once a month on a Monday night and is limited to 10 participants. At this stage we are not planning to run Dating Game in 2012, but please do express your interest by calling our reception. Should we receive considerable interest for this group we may consider running it.
“Relationship Minefield” was designed to assist adult men already in a relationship to improve their relationship skills, for the ultimate aim of more happiness and fulfillment for both partners in the relationship. The group meets regularly and runs for 8 sessions. Partners are invited to attend some of the sessions.
Each year we offer a number of Information Nights on topics related to being an adult with an autism spectrum disorder. The purpose of these evenings, held on a Tuesday most months of the year, is to provide insights, strategies and access to experts for questions.
For professionals interested in further training in autism spectrum conditions in adults we offer 2 intensive workshops: ASC: Diagnosis & Treatment, Basic Workshop and ASC Diagnosis and Treatment, Advanced Workshop. Each workshop is run by 4 specialists in ASC, focuses on diagnosis and treatment, and provides both up-to-date information to inform practice, skill demonstration, and opportunity for questions. The basic workshop is for new practitioners, or for those with a few years of experience. The advanced workshop is for professionals who are experienced in ASC, but would value the opportunity for further development of these skills through a research update, information about complex and atypical presentations, as well as case discussion.
